Agency, in-house or home office
I’ve worked in a variety of settings and don’t necessarily prefer one to the other. Well, that’s a bit of a fib; if given the choice, I’ll choose telecommute with occasional in-office meetings 100% of the time, but there’s something to be said for office camaraderie, especially when your comrades are creatives.

Adobe Creative Suite, The Early Years
I was lucky enough to go to Jr and High schools with phenomenal art departments. The teachers were passionate and invested in getting their students educated in the newest art and design technologies. I first got my hands on Photoshop in 1993 (13 years old), and while our design curriculum centered around basic foundations like color theory, composition, manual paste-ups and printing processes, I also got a healthy dose of digital technologies, web design & printing prep. In 1995 I started using PageMaker for magazine and newspaper layouts, and while I never attended design school after graduating in 1998, I continued doing freelance design for small projects, club events and album artwork for local Seattle artists and record labels.
Over the years Adobe Creative Suite has grown and expanded, and I have kept up with the vast majority of it, slowly adding more skills to my arsenal while growing through my career and getting interested in other areas of design, such as motion graphics and video editing. Even without a formal education I have never felt at a disadvantage, participating in master classes, coursework at schools like SVC and scouring the internet for tutorials and projects to learn programs on my own. It’s amazing what you can do these days with some curiosity and a Google search!
Web Development
While I don’t consider my self a web developer, I do have some serious front-end dev chops. When it comes to HTML and CSS I’m a champ. WordPress themes: sure. PHP and JavaScript/JQuery are not my favorite thing in the world to do, but if necessary I can get it done. In all practical purposes, however, I prefer to work with a dedicated developer. The most efficient work scenario for me is spending my time doing what I do best – UI, UX and overall design – while a developer does what they do best.
